Pomeranian Weight Overview
The AKC standard calls for 3 to 7 pounds, with 4 to 6 pounds preferred for show. Some Pomeranians may be larger throwbacks to their bigger ancestors.. Males tend to be larger at 3–7 lbs versus 2–6 lbs for females.
Genetics, diet, and exercise all play a role in determining your dog's ideal weight. The growth chart below provides a general timeline for weight gain from puppyhood through adulthood.

When Does a Pomeranian Stop Growing?
As a small-sized toy breed from Germany, the Pomeranian reaches full height of 6–7 inches by approximately 12–15 months. Full adult weight of 3–7 lbs follows within a few months as the dog fills out.
Nutrition during the growth phase is critical. Given the breed's predisposition to Patellar Luxation, proper growth-rate management is especially important.
Is My Pomeranian Overweight?
To determine if your Pomeranian is at a healthy weight (3–7 lbs target):
- Rib test: You should be able to feel the ribs without pressing hard, with a thin layer of fat covering them
- Waist check: Viewed from above, there should be a visible waist behind the ribs
- Tuck-up: From the side, the abdomen should tuck up behind the rib cage
Their long double coat coat can mask weight gain, so hands-on assessment is essential. If your Pomeranian is overweight, work with your veterinarian to develop a safe weight loss plan. Even a 10% reduction can reduce the risk of Patellar Luxation and other conditions.
Feeding Recommendation
Adult Pomeranians (3–7 lbs) typically need 0.5 to 0.1 cups of high-quality dry food per day, divided into two meals. A formula suited to small breeds provides appropriate nutrient density. Short walks and lively indoor play sessions meet their needs. They are active indoors and enjoy puzzle toys that challenge their sharp minds.—adjust portions based on activity level. Budget $33–54/month for food costs.
